The Carl Schurz Park Association

The Carl Schurz Park Association is the oldest community-based volunteer park association in the city of New York. In the 1970s, concerned parents banded together and organized a funding campaign to supplant drastic parks budgetary cuts and save the Carl Schurz Park playground from further ruin. Cut to 2003, and you'll find an Association still very much driven by the impact of a drastically reduced parks budget. However, for the past year and a half the Association has set its sights not only on saving our Park from further decline but also on designing a master Improvement Plan for the long-term restoration, renovation and maintenance plan for an admittedly very special corner of Manhattan.

Liz Christy Garden

This was the first community garden in New York City. In 1973, a local resident named Liz Christy and a group of gardening activists known as the Green Guerillas were planting window boxes, vacant lots and tree pits in the area. They saw the large rubble-strewn lot as a potential garden and in December went to the City to find a way to gain official use of the land. Volunteers hauled the garbage and rubble out, spread donated topsoil, installed a fence, and began planting.
